I was encouraged on a few levels by an article I recently read in One+ magazine by Jason Hensel titled “FACE TIME” www.mpiweb.org. It’s short (critical for me!) and worth the read. Maybe it just hit a few topics that are near and dear to me. First off, in a world driven by speed and technology you can’t pick up a trade magazine today without an article pushing technology applications geared to the meetings industry; some designed to eliminate the need to meet at all! While some applications have definitely made it easier from an operations/logistics standpoint it sometimes feels like we forget the purpose and the benefit of why people gather in the first place; the ideas shared and relationships built that can ultimately lead to new opportunities! I understand that technology is an important part, but I also believe that the value of face to face connections can sometimes be minimized in the process and it was refreshing to see that value communicated.
Secondly, I loved this view by Jonah Lehrer: “We either work together or fail alone, that in order for any individual or industry to succeed and grow there need to be purposeful connections”. As someone who has worked to synergize people from different cultures towards a common goal and purpose for the last 20+ years, this concept resonated with me. Bringing a diverse group of people together and helping them to “connect” to share ideas has proved invaluable (not easy to do, but irreplaceable); in fact, it is what our company Global Cynergies’ is all about! Maybe that’s why I was drawn to the article! Let me know what you think.
